Gully Boy Movie Review

There’s a dialogue in the movie which fits this movie “Hard hai bhai!!”

Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt , is a coming-of-age rap musical about Murad who hails from a ghetto in India. Murad, a young boy crushed with poverty, harbouring a burning passion for rap music and Safeena, is constantly battling with his need to escape his pocket-sized home because of his father’s second marriage. Murad is mesmerised with MC Sher’s (Siddhant Chaturvedi) performance at a school function. Hence, he reaches out to Sher and shows him his talent. Henceforth, with the support of MC Sher and his family, sans his father, Murad’s journey of success escalates.

By the looks of it, it’s just another from rags to riches story, but there’s much more to it than just that. There are four heroes that make this a blockbuster; Zoya Akhtar, Ranveer Singh, Vijay Maurya and the music. It is evident that Zoya has taken inspiration from Hollywood’s note-able films but due diligence, credit has to be given to her for such finesse and presenting it in such a real manner that the story resonates and reaches the hearts of billions, the screenplay can easily match to any Hollywood movie. There couldn’t have been a better actor to play Murad than Ranveer. Ranveer puts unmatchable energy, passion and his rapping skills are up-to par for the character. He’s truly a power house and a bona fide artist. MC Sher says a dialogue to Murad: “Terey ander toofan hai bhai” and this goes for Ranveer as well. The story was 2 hours and 30 minutes long, so the story does thin out towards the middle but the dialogues and humour written by Vijay Maurya add to the emotionally intelligent storyline. Rap music is the heart and soul of the movie, written by the famous lyricists Javed Akhtar, half of the screen time is rap music shot beautifully in the slums of India with real rappers giving authenticity to the film.

Alia Bhatt’s character; Safeena’s screen presence is sparse, but every time she graces the screen she leaves a mark. Safeena, a hijabi medical student and a daughter of a strict high class family, is a violent and jealous girlfriend of Murad; who’s also a prevaricator. Bhatt, is eminently talented, adds life and spark to the serious mood of the story. Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt are perfectly paired and do full justice to there respective characters and the chemistry between them is palpable. One major plot hole was the glorification and justification of theft, vandalism and drug dealing without any dire consequences. But otherwise, the whole cast and crew deserves applause 👏🏻

Gully Boy is paisa wasool and definitely worth your time.

Therefore, Sawari Approved 4.5/5 🌟

1. Cheekh

This newly aired suspense drama serial is the talk of the town. The plot revolves around the mystery of Nayab’s killer/rapist and the consequences that follow. The story starts off easy with the camaraderie of three best friends; Mannat (Saba Qamar), Nayab (Ushna Shah) and Haya (Azekah Daniel). Things later take a turn for the worst when Nayab is brutally raped and murdered at her best friend’s house.  Directed by Badar Mehmood, the story deals with social issues like rape, toxic step-mother and selling off daughters in the name of marriage. So far, so good! Just four episodes in and we’re hooked. The entire cast has done an outstanding job with their respective roles.   Can’t wait to see how the story unfolds and will justice be served? Will Mannat win the fight against all odds and bring justice to Nayab? Or will Cheekh be just another drama where money wins all?

3. Kaisa Hai Naseeban

Upon landing in Malaysia with her Phupho (Uzma Gillani) and the rest of her family, turns out that what was told to her father was a far cry from the truth. The story is based on the notion of domestic abuse, fraud marriages and dowry system that is prevailing in the Pakistani society. Uzma Gillani nails it as the conniving mother in law and her performance really makes you despise her character. On the other hand, Ramsha Khan really does justice to her character of a sheltered and pampered daughter who’s always been told, her in-law’s house is her true home and she’s to be patient through the worst of times but never return to her parent’s home because lest the family honor be ruined! Petty mentality but unfortunately this mindset still plagues the lower middle and middle class in our society. Mariam’s journey is of pain and a cold reminder that there are many like her in real life.

Chammi (Sajal Aly) brings light and joy to an otherwise intense and serious play.  It’s a promising start and only time will tell if it’ll live up to the hype or not. Watching a period play makes one think that except for freedom, has much changed in our society?

Note BB Cream By J. Review and Swatch

Choosing the right beauty product for your make-up needs is always challenging nowadays due to every brand claiming their product is the best. It is very seldom that you find a clutter-breaking beauty product on the shelf that grasps your attention. Recently, I purchased the Note BB Cream by J-Dot and it is safe to say that indeed it broke the clutter of beauty products.

Mostly, we use BB cream for our everyday outgoing needs for college or office to give ourselves the perfect natural look with a make up like finish. Before purchasing Note by J-dot, I have been an avid user of BB-cream from other top brands like Garnier and Maybelline compared to these two, BB Cream by J-dot definitely did wonders. The product texture is smooth. It is absolutely perfect for those who want coverage everyday but at the same-time don’t want to look cakey with a full make-up base.

As a consumer it is our right to know what ingredients are being used in a product and if they are safe and healthy to our skin. J-dot makes quite a few functional claims about the products; some of the key claims being i. Dermatologically tested ii. Paraben-free.

Apart from that, the product is SPF-15 with guaranteed 15-hour sun protection and comes with a really mild fragrance. The Product is perfect for people witch dry to combination skin types.

Note by J-dot has become my choice of everyday make-up solution. The only con apart from being slightly expensive than other creams is that it is available in limited shades only which really limits your choice and even though you like the product but are unable to get you the perfect tone that you desire. That being said, everyone who wants natural make-up experience everyday should try it to believe it.

Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick Creeper Review and Swatches

This super affordable liquid lipstick needs no introduction. ColourPop’s Ultra Matte lip range has many shades but today I’ll be talking about Creeper. Why? Well… because it’s my favourite out of them all.

First Impression:

The packaging is pretty much like all the liquid lipsticks out there, plastic bottle with metallic cap. Neat, slick, sturdy and pretty. The color is a beautiful bright classic red.

Application:

Like all of ColourPop’s Ultra Matte Lipsticks, Creeper also has a doe-foot shaped applicator.  Before trying it I tried different shades from the Ultra Matte Lipsticks and wasn’t entirely happy with the application or pay off. Therefore when I tried Creeper I was pleasantly surprised! It glided on smoothly, the applicator made it easy to fill up the lips without messing my lip shape.

Formula:

The formula is very light on the lips, not patchy at all. I have dry lips so I always prime my lips before applying any liquid lipstick and I’d suggest you to do the same if you also have dry lips! Fair warning: It dries up pretty quickly so you have to be quick while applying it because once it dries then it WILL NOT move whatsoever!

Pigmentation & Lasting Power:

Creeper has amazing pigmentation; I’ve swatched for you to see it for yourself. Two swipes and you have a perfect red pout ready!  After it dries it doesn’t move and can last up to good 7-8 hours if you don’t have very oily food. Even when it does comes off; it does not crumble or look disgusting and leaves behind a red-ish/orange tint behind. You can only remove it completely with a makeup remover so do not hurt yourself by rubbing your lips!

Does it transfer?

No it does not.

Pros:

The color will suit all skin tones

Affordable

Long Lasting

Transfer proof

Amazing pigmentation

Cons:

None!

Colourpop’s Ultra Matte Liquid lipstick – Creeper is Sawari Approved and we love it! 5/5 for this beauty!

Laser Hair Treatment: Is it worth it?

Since my childhood, I never really had too many facial hair.I had hair on my face towards the jawline and as soon as I turned 16, I decided to get them waxed. I soon learned that the problem with waxing was that you feel wonderful for 5 days but then later on the hair begins to grow and you are stuck. If you have sensitive and acne prone skin then there are chances of you getting pimples as well.  It was in December 2016, when I decided to look for a permanent solution. After hearing from my cousin, I decided to opt for laser treatment. Although, Laser isn’t a permanent solution but I decided to go for it. Jeez! Let me tell you all, it was one of the most horrible experiences. I agree that some people get amazing results, but this wasn’t the case with me.

After searching for options, I decided to opt for Tasneem Nakhoda. She sits at Laser soft- The Skin Clinic, located behind The Ocean Mall,Clifton. She is an amazing woman, who does it perfectly. Sadly, laser didn’t suit me and this wasn’t her fault.  I had my first sitting in December 2016. It was an amazing experience and I was totally satisfied with the result.

This continued for 5-6 months, until June 2017- When I noticed that the hair growth towards my chin area had increased. I decided to visit Ms.Tasneem to discuss this issue. However, I was told that people usually get such results if there are any hormonal changes or if they are stressed out.

That was the day I decided to stop getting my laser. I later realized that laser wasn’t really an option for me because it works perfectly for those who have a good hair growth. I now get my face wax after every 15 days. *sobs*

For those of you, who are thinking to get laser done, it doesn’t really work on face. So, if you are thinking to get laser done, here are few things that you need to keep in mind:

  1.  Laser isn’t a permanent solution. However, electrolysis is
  • Laser doesn’t really have any side effects. For me, the results weren’t satisfying
  • Results for laser totally vary. Laser works best for areas which have thicker and coarse hair
  • You can get it for any part of your body, except eye brows or any other area near your eyes
  • Laser treatments are expensive and the cost depends on the area you are getting lasered. I got it done on my face and neck and It costed me 10K+
  • Laser doesn’t hurt you at all. There is no pain factor involved
  • If you have continuous hormonal changes and if you are stressed out, never go for laser!

I wish you all good luck if you are opting for laser treatments. Make sure to check and read reviews on the clinic you are opting for.

Disclaimer: Getting your facial hair removed/waxed is a personal choice. My best friend doesn’t get them waxed and is totally okay with it. Facial hair or not, you’ll still look beautiful. Keep slaying, because beauty lies in confidence.

When In London

If you are a Pakistani girl and the only daughter in the house, you would definitely relate to the hurdles of traveling alone.

I have been to London quite a few times since my childhood, but this time London was calling me for my younger brother’s graduation. Although, I had to visit Birmingham for the Grad ceremony, but before that I decided to go to London.

Because this time I was traveling alone, I had restrictions including: where to go and not and of course the BUDGET!!

It was a 20 days trip and I had to plan it accordingly. People out there who are traveling to London during June/July, make sure you take T-shirts, because it’s sunny!

Let me tell you all,  London is one of the beautiful destinations out there. You will literally fall in love with the streets, the weather, the peace, the early mornings, late nights. But, London is one of the most expensive cities too.

As I was traveling alone, Budget was a constraint. However, to make my trip worthwhile and that too in the limited budget, I decided to visit the free cost sights.

London is a huge city and one of the best things that an individual can do in London is just to wander around the streets, the beautiful parks and gardens and see sights. If you are looking for seeings sights free of cost than your go to places are:  London Eye, M&M World, Tower Bridge, Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Walk along the Thames .Taking pictures of these places, enjoining the view with a cup of tea, is all you need to brighten up your mood! You can book tickets online in order to save if you want to visit attractions like – London Eye, Madame Tussauds.

People who are fond of Museums, London have more than 20 museums that are free of cost and people visit them usually on weekends. Famous museums like British Museum, National Gallery, Victoria and Albert, National History Museum, Science Museum are few of the many, that I visited during my trip.

Who isn’t fond of peace in parks?! There are parks including Hyde Park, St.James’ Park, Regent’s Park, Kensington Park, which can be explored, without any cost. During my trip to The Hyde Park, I bought snacks from a superstore made the most of the food with a peaceful sight. Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Fountain, is a fountain inside Hyde Park, where water flows from two directions; a perfect spot at a sunny and hot day. There are different green gardens across the city where you can go for an evening walk as well.

During my trip, I opted to travel more by bus than tube. This was a cheaper way to travel, hehe. 😀
A single bus fare wouldn’t cost you more than £1.50 However, while traveling on a tube, the rates of the tube ticket goes up depending on the peek hours, the zones you are traveling to, irrespective of your Oyster Card. The best part if traveling by the bus is you can easily checkout the beauty of London and views especially from the upper deck. So that’s a win-win situation, you get to take a free tour of the city in a cheaper price.

Food in London is quite expensive. There are high end restaurants and then there are street foods in London that doesn’t cost more than £6. Borough Market, Real food Market and Camden Street are few options where you can find cheap street food, which is YUM! You can visit Supermarkets like: Tesco, Sainsburys, M&S, Waitrose in london, just like I did, to get good snacks.

How would you feel if you have baked a cake, decorated it with your favorite icing and toppings and then the doctor tells you that your sugar level is at the border line. This is exactly what happened with me at the airport. Not only I had to leave London, I had to bid goodbye to all the shopping that I did, because my Luggage was OVRWEIGHT!

I couldn’t visit places in Birmingham. All my shopping didn’t make it through Pakistan with me. It’s safe to say that my trip didn’t go as I planned but would I go again and do it all over? Hell, yeah! Because London didn’t just keep my shopping, it stole my heart too! London over any place, any day!
